Akbash Livestock Guardian Dogs
Raising sheep in Kansas has its share of risks,
including coyotes, roaming dogs and many other
potential predators.  We needed a herd
protector.  Llamas or donkeys would have to be
caught and restrained twice daily to move our
sheep with herding dogs, so we chose livestock
guardian dogs.
Matted hair, curling dual dew claws and drooling maws made the Great Pyrenees less
than appealing.  But when we met Akbash at a couple of farms, we fell in love.  Our
visitors always want to see the sheep so we socialized our Akbash -- they're sure all
visitors have come to see them.  Heaven help the foolish coyote or stray dog that
approaches the property, though.  The real challenge has been convincing the
Akbash  that they don’t need to guard the county, just our property.  To paraphrase
Robert  Frost, "good electric fences make good neighbors."

They live in the barn area with their sheep, sometimes preferring the ewes,
sometimes  the rams.  Hayli, the older female, is more of a property guardian, with the
sheep just  being part of what "belongs" and should be protected.  Kagan, the male,
is more  bonded to the flock and mingles with the sheep, greeting his favorites with
face licking  (much to the annoyance of the sheep).  Both dogs are neutered since
they don't need distraction from their job of protecting the sheep and farm.
Training a LGD to do its job is different than training a herding
dog or pet.  The nature of their job requires a degree of
independence that can be frustrating to an owner used to
devoted obedience from a dog.  In addition, dealing with
110-120 lb of athletic muscle can be challenging if training
hasn't started with a pup.  Reputable breeders are great
resources for guidance on integrating a LGD into your
operation.  Diane Spisak (Kagan's breeder) has lots of great
information at her site...
